TM Construction, formerly known as Mountain Construction, was entrusted with a portion of the transformation of a cherished family cabin into a modern mountain home. Originally built in the late 1940s by the client’s father, the 400-square-foot cabin held deep sentimental value. Rather than demolishing it, the client was determined to preserve the historic structure while expanding it into a full-time residence. To achieve this, TM Construction seamlessly incorporated the old cabin into a newly built 2,500-square-foot addition, creating a contemporary yet personal home.
The homeowners initially began planning the project in 2015, but struggled to find a construction team capable of executing their vision. When Troy Morris of TM Construction took over in 2020, they faced a strict County permitting process that required them to complete within a tight deadline. Despite the time crunch, the team successfully finished in under a year and even framed the addition in only four months, demonstrating efficiency and adaptability under pressure.
Preserving the integrity of the original cabin while integrating it into the expansion posed an exciting challenge. TM Construction rebuilt the foundation, installed new siding and roofing, and carefully maintained the majority of the original interior, including the original wood stove. Throughout the project, TM chose to employ innovative construction techniques and materials, including the use of pre-painted James Hardie board, pre-painted LB trim, pre-finished siding, TimberTech deck boards, and a glass railing system.
As construction progressed, the homeowners introduced creative ideas that added character and uniqueness to the home, and if any challenges arose, the TM team handled them head on. One such feature was an exposed steel beam in the garage, which required careful navigation of plumbing installations that ensured both functionality and aesthetics. TM Construction met these challenges with expertise, ensuring the final result met the homeowners’ vision without compromising structural integrity.
Among the many standout features of the home, TM Construction takes great pride in the east-side (?) portal frame with new windows, which maximizes natural light and showcases breathtaking views. The upstairs master suite and bath, The expanded back deck, constructed with the latest TimberTech materials, space to feature a hot tub, and custom stairs that are lined with composite railings framed with glass sheets, adding a sleek, modern touch.
With TM Construction’s portion of the project complete, the homeowners are that much closer to a finished modernized mountain retreat that maintains the heart and soul of the original cabin. Though the overall project remains ongoing, the company’s 2,800-square-foot contribution stands as a testament to their ability to blend tradition with innovation, overcome challenges with strategic problem-solving, and bring a homeowner’s dream to life.
Summary
TM Construction seamlessly integrated a cherished 1940s family cabin into a stunning modern mountain home, preserving its historic charm while expanding it into a full-time residence. Despite strict permitting deadlines and structural challenges, the team completed their portion in under a year, showcasing expert craftsmanship, using quality materials.
